Mac Pro (2019), Mac mini (M1, 2020) with a 10Gb Ethernet card, and Mac Studio (2022) have Lights Out Management function and are able to power-on by Apple Remote Desktop. Aimed at computer administrators responsible for large numbers of computers and teachers who need to assist individuals or perform group demonstrations, Apple Remote Desktop allows users to remotely control or monitor other computers over a network. Note that in the Sharing preferences of each remote machine you must turn on Remote Management and Remote Login (you will not be allowed to turn on Screen Sharing because this is already set via Remote Management).Apple Remote Desktop ( ARD) is a Macintosh application produced by Apple Inc., first released on March 14, 2002, that replaced a similar product called Apple Network Assistant. The internal ports of the remote machines are always (and must be so) the standard 32. The point is that the same IP address means that all connections go to the remote router initially and only there does the router send the connection to the correct remote machine (because the connection attribute from Admin RDA application contains the public ports for that connection) the router port forwarding configuration ties this ports to one of the reserved remote network IPs and therefore sends it to the internal ports of the computer with that IP. all machines in ARD app will have the same IP address and the same entry for DNS name, so all machines have the same DNS. Note that the attribute settings for each computer in the ARD admin app must all have the same entries for Address (the IP address) e.g. 3285, 5902) - and again set the internal IP to the one reserved for that computer again enter the same two incremented ports in the ARD admin app (the connection attributes for the machine which has that reserved IP).ĭo this for each remote machine, always increment the two public ports a further two numbers each time. "ARD Mini One") but this time increment only the first two slots ie the public ports by two - I read somewhere that they should be two numbers apart (e.g. Then for each other remote computer, in the router add another port forwarding configuration (edit name to make it clear to you which computer has that IP and ports e.g. In the admin ARD application (that I am connecting from) the connection attributes for the machine which has that reserved IP at the remote location must use the same public port settings (Remote Management Port: 3283 and Screen sharing port 5900). The reserved local IP for this group of ports is the same as one of the machines on that remote network. Port forwarding on the router now has one ARD standard port setup 3283, 5900 in all 4 slots, ie. There is a reserved IP (DHCP Reservation) for each of the three machines I want to access. router is Time Capsule) but the principles should apply to others.Ĭonfigure Network settings in Port forwarding on the router (Apple Time Capsule) as follows. Yippee! In case it helps anyone else this is the only setup I found which works. I have fixed the issues now - although I don't know why the update to 3.9.3 client stopped everything from working in the first place.Įssentially I started from scratch with router settings at the remote location (these were complicated by the confusing interactions between the router port forwarding and OS Server which runs on one of the remote machines).Īfter many false starts and detours I ended up with the following setup which has fixed lots of anomalous behaviour in Remote Desktop so that now all three remote machines connect flawlessly and always display their correct status to the ARD application on the machine which I use to log in remotely. Although this is not new behaviour, just normal for RD's mysteries. All show as offline in ARD Admin app, despite being able to connect from the mac-mini. The working mac (mac mini on latest Sierra) is also running OS Server the other two are an iMac on latest Sierra and an older MacBook pro on latest El Capitan. Now it is trashed again a simple (you'd think) update, to a version which Apple says is to improve reliability. Looking at the computer list, as displayed in the admin app, the client that I can reach display the ARD version as 3.9.3 but the other two display 3.9.2 - but I guess that is not surprising, given that the admin machine can't reach the other two in order to update its info.Ī while back it took me a very long time to get Remote Desktop to work but it has been reliable since the previous update to 3.9.2. Since then, when I try to connect from another admin mac using the Admin app (latest 3.9), I can connect to one of the three clients but not the other two. I have updated three macs to 3.9.3 Client which was offered from Software Update this week.
